Your product care questions, answered

We've put together answers to the most common questions about caring for your NPV Woodworks cutting boards and furniture. Follow these guidelines to keep your items in pristine condition and ensure they stand the test of time.

How to keep your cutting board or furniture looking its best?

For cutting boards, wash under running water only when absolutely necessary. Daily cleaning is best done with a spray bottle filled with warm, very diluted soapy water. Spray just enough to cover the area, then wipe dry with paper towel or a rag. Follow up with a damp (not wet) cloth. Always stand the board on its edge to dry evenly, preventing warping.

For general care, pay attention to the surface colour. When the colour starts to fade, reapply a light layer of beeswax. This not only brightens and boldens the colour but also contributes to longevity and helps seal the surface from food penetration.

For long-term care, especially if you've forgotten about your board or use it daily without regular maintenance, butcher block oil is essential. If your board looks faded, feels dry and rough, and knife marks are prominent, it's time for an oil treatment. Place the board on a towel you don't mind getting oily and wear gloves. Pour butcher block oil onto the board and rub it in with a lint-free rag until sufficiently coated. Let it soak for 3-6 hours, adding more if needed. Finish with a good top coat of beeswax.

Do epoxy products need unique care?

Yes, for products featuring epoxy, it's crucial to avoid excessive heat. High temperatures can distort or even melt the epoxy surface, compromising its appearance and integrity.

What to avoid when caring for your handcrafted items?

The two most common mistakes are soaking cutting boards in water to loosen stuck-on food and putting them in the dishwasher. For a good lifespan, these boards require gentle handling. Avoid using too much soap; a little goes a long way with wood. Never put soap directly on the board.
